What is the short history of Heckfield Place?
The heart of Heckfield Place and our country estate of 438 acres is our Georgian Grade II listed manor house.
It was built in the 1760s by Jane Baker, who was recently widowed and sought to live closer to her family. Jane eventually remarried Revd. Montague Rush, and it was their family home until his death in 1785 when it was sold to the John Lefevre, who was from a successful Huguenot family of textile dyers, gin distillers and bankers from East London.
John died in 1790, leaving the estate to his daughter Helena’s husband Charles Shaw Lefevre – who as a condition of marriage and inheritance took on ‘Lefevre’ as part of his last name.
Under the stewardship of Charles, Heckfield’s current acreage was acquired and The House was expanded, before eventually passing the House on to his son, also named Charles Shaw Lefevre, who went on to become Speaker of the House of Commons, the second-longest Speaker in history, and co-found the Agricultural Society of England.
Having no male heir, Shaw Lefevre negotiated a life as Lord Eversley. Sadly upon his retirement, he was widowed – outliving his wife by nearly 30 years. During these decades, Lord Eversley's chief pleasures were his gardens and his game. His Head Gardener during much of this time was William Wildsmith, one of the foremost men if his profession, and whose collection of trees and garden designs are still seen at Heckfield today. Wildsmith is the namesake of Wildsmith Skin, and his choreography of ancient trees that form our woodlands today is a lasting symbol of Heckfield’s forward-looking view on sustainability and legacy. After Lord Eversley passed in 1888, Heckfield was home to The Walpole family until the mid-20th century before it was used commercially until our current owner, Dr. Gerald Chan, purchased the estate in 2009.
The House and estate went through an extension restoration that took nine years, before opening in September 2018.
