Event: Art / Walled Garden lantern walk + lunch

As part of our Winter Solstice celebrations, join renowned artist Carolyn Quartermaine for an extraordinary afternoon art masterclass with evergreen foraged from the estate before creating beautiful, natural lanterns using our celebrated moon calendars – with a lantern procession through the Walled Garden.

Starting with a short walk into the estate to gather leaves and evergreen foliage, the group will go inside to echo the drawing studio she ran with her students at the Royal College of Art, London, where she was a visiting professor and lecture. The Matisse-like collage will then be transformed into lanterns lit by LED lights.

Carolyn’s work spans over three decades at the cutting edge of art and design. Her paintings, photography, visionary and inspirational fabrics, art direction and interior installations have been seen across the globe in the most exclusive and prestigious locations: from clients such as Hermes, Louis Vuitton, Givenchy Couture and Rakes Progress magazine to shows at Tristan Hoare Gallery, Chelsea Art Museum NY, Museum of Modern Art Ostend, National Art Museum Peking, Sketch and the Musee de la Peinture, Fragonard, Grasse and the Musee de la Toile de Jouy, France.

“I'm an artist, so painting, collaging, photography and art directing all merge into my exhibitions or installations," she explains.

"I source, collect and mix to create new looks and rare combinations. It's all about the mark making - the tiny splashes of colour, the hidden layers. The historical references are deeply embedded, pulling together stories from the 18th century to now."

Children 12 and over must be accompanied by an adult/parent/guardian.

Please note that it rains occasionally in Hampshire and we suggest bringing coats and suitable footwear for any estate walk.

Bound by the rhythm of the seasons, our restaurants are fuelled by the biodynamic Market Garden and organic Home Farm. From gluts to unloved bits like beetroot tops, we hope not to waste an ounce of produce.

This set lunch menu – echoing our Culinary Director Skye Gyngell’s ground-breaking Scratch menu at Spring in London – features elegantly simple, delicious food using ingredients that otherwise might have been overlooked.

Being inspired by what we have to hand means we cannot alter the set menu on the day.
